Types Of Hand & Wrist Prosthetics
There are several varieties of artificial limbs, with different levels of functionality. In general, prosthetic hands and artificial wrist joints can be broken down into five categories.
- Passive Function (Cosmetic)
- Conventional (Body-Powered)
- External Power (Electrically Powered Or Myoelectric)
- Hybrid
- Adaptive (Recreational)
Cosmetic Prosthetics – For The Look You Want
A passive function hand prosthetic, also known as a cosmetic prosthetic, offers more form than function. They can be useful for simple tasks like carrying groceries but don’t usually allow for more precise gripping, flexing, and rotation. Less functionality also means they are generally less expensive than other types.
Body Powered Upper Limb Prosthetics
Conventional hand and wrist prosthetic devices attach to the upper body employing a harness system. A cable connects from the harness to the mechanical hand, hook, or elbow. You will use upper body movements to control this prosthetic. This type of prosthetic is durable, offers excellent functionality, and is less expensive than higher-tech myoelectric devices.
High Tech Myoelectric Prosthetics
External power prosthetics work via electrical power (batteries) or myoelectric impulses, which originate in the muscles of your residual limb. Myoelectric devices attach to the residual limb via a custom-fitted socket that contains sensors to receive these impulses. Myoelectric limbs come closer to mimicking actual anatomical hands or arms than other upper limb prosthetics.
What About Hybrid Hand Prosthetics?
As you might expect from the name, hybrid prosthetics combine the functionality of both a myoelectric and conventional prostheses. Hybrid limbs usually have both a harness system and an external power source. Hybrid hand prosthetics are most suitable for people with a higher level of limb loss, such as transhumeral (above the elbow) amputees.
Adaptive Prosthetics Meet Custom Needs
Adaptive prosthetics are also known as recreational prosthetics, and they are custom-made based on the wearer’s need or desire to participate in a specific activity or function, such as an athletic sport or a type of work. At Evolve Prosthetics & Orthotics, we can fabricate a custom prosthetic to fit your unique lifestyle.
